Pharmacists have been in high demand since medications were invented. That demand will continue to increase, as the “baby boomers” age and require medications to sustain life. A pharmacist must meet certain educational requirements prior to working in the field of pharmaceuticals.

In order to become a pharmacist, a person must go to pharmacy school. The type of degree earned is called a PharmD. Degree. Also, in order to work in the United States, a student must take, and pass, the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination. Other requirements vary from state to state and should be made known during the last year of college.

When choosing an educational institution, it’s important to search for one that is Accredited by the Accreditation Council For Pharmacy Education. There are several colleges that offer a doctorate degree in PharmD as well.

Another person who can be found working in a pharmacy is the pharmacy technician. This position requires only a high school education or GED. Most states also require a person who wishes to work as a pharmacy technician to attend a college program by the same name. This program is a certificate program and generally takes less than a year to obtain.

Pursuing a pharmaceutical career today offers a variety of opportunities for the pharmacist unlike years past where they simply poured pills behind the counter in a pharmacy. Pharmacists are more involved in patient care and are a crucial part of the healthcare team. The educational requirements for a pharmaceutical career are rigorous ensuring the student can fulfill their expected responsibilities upon graduation.

Since 1992 pharmacists have been expected to obtain the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree. The PharmD requires six years of college level work beyond high school, including two years of pre-pharmacy coursework with a high emphasis on math, chemistry, biology and physics. Four years of professional courses follow to include pharmacology, pharmaceutical administration, drug information, pharmaceutical chemistry and clinical pharmacology.

Educational requirements do not end upon graduation. To become a fully licensed pharmacist (RPh) the student must participate in a clinical internship involving direct patient care where they participate in patient rounds with physicians, offer suggestions for medication changes and proper dosing and answer team questions. The last step in licensing involves passing the NAPLEX (North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination). Education in the pharmaceutical career extends well past licensure with most states requiring ongoing continuing education credits each year.

A pharmaceutical career isn’t something to take lightly – and they’re not just falling from the sky. Here are a few tips for breaking into the industry you can use to find the job of your dreams
Get in on the ground floor: Consider working as an apprentice or even an assistant in the field – you may spend more time researching smallbusiness.xo.com for your boss than selling meds but you’ll get a well-rounded viewpoint of what makes it all tick.
Apply for a program: Many of the major pharmaceutical companies offer programs (many designed for recent college grads) that allow for training while working and eventual promotion. If you’re willing to relocate this could be a great way to break in and get some real world experience.
Go back to school: For some reason, pharmaceutical sales has been pegged as something any young, attractive person can doit’s not. If your education is totally unrelated you may want to consider getting a marketing or sales degree to make yourself stand out in a field of applicants. The more qualified you are, the better.

The outlook for jobs in the United States is not very good at this time. However, the prospects for pharmacists is much better than many other careers. The population of the United States is aging and new medicines are coming on the market all the time.

Pharmacists need about six or seven years of college and pharmacy school. All pharmacists must be licensed in the state where they work. Students should have good math, science and people skills.

Pharmacists must serve at least a one year residency. Residencies may be served in hospitals, in a community or pharmacy or in a managed care system. Some people serve a second year residency known as a specialized residency

Pharmacists have many choices in where they work. Pharmacists may work in universities, small or large pharmacies, hospital, nursing homes, or state or federal government agencies. Pharmacists can work in other states by passing that states exam and obtaining a license from that state.

Pharmacists work closely with other health professionals. Pharmacists must check prescriptions carefully for errors and make sure patients understand how to take their medications correctly. They must also know what other prescriptions the patients are taking to insure the medicines will not interfere with other medications they are taking.

If you have recently have decided to pursue a career that involves the pharmaceutical industry, you may be wondering how to get started. The most important first step is to find a school that has this degree as an option to pursue. If you already have a school in mind prior to this decision, contact an admissions advisor to more closely discuss the next steps that are needed for you to begin schoolwork in this area.

However, if you have not yet even decided on a school, you can easily search for universities or colleges that have this degree specialization through a variety of online search engine sites that allow for this. Once you have finally located and been accepted to a school, the next step is to see what books you will need to complete your coursework. If you are having trouble locating this, you can again consult with your admissions counselor. Many times you can get cheap textbooks online that are used or simply rent the book for the semester in which you will need it for the course.

All in all, pursuing a career in the pharmaceutical industry is a very rewarding experience as you will most likely be working hands-on with people on a daily basis and supplying them with the medication that they need. For more information, search the web or ask your school to assist you.
